Exploring unfamiliar territory

The gallery at the Alliance Française Du Cap in Loop Street in Cape Town will host an all-female group art exhibition entitled Inside Out for the month of April.

Inside Out is an exhibition about exploring unfamiliar territory. The eight participating artists have transformed a time of uncertainty and isolation through artistic expression. Each work reflects the outer expression of the personal and varied experiences of the artists. Through painting, sculpture and installation the intention is to bring artists and viewer together in emergence of the new.

Participating artists are Debbie Field, Anthea Czech, Heidi Benn, Larissa Matthews (sculpture) and Yasmine Yacoubi from Cape Town, as well as Mary-Jane Morris (Barrington, WC), Pam Heaton (Chintsa, EC) and Liz Bodvai (Melbourne, Australia).

The exhibition is a representation of their work during the last 12 months, some of which under strict lockdown, being forced to stay inside and now slowly venturing out again - into a world which has changed - and changed them - forever.

Inside Out will run from April 1 to 30, 2021. The opening night on April 1 coincides with First Thursday Cape Town and several of the artists will be present. There will be a cash bar at the AF and of course all Covid hygiene measures will be in place and social distancing observed at all times. No mask no entry.

Anthea Czech lives in Cape Town and has been painting part-time for many years. "I am fascinated by the diversity and universality of humankind, exploring and interpreting our commonalities and differences in the visual medium. I draw inspiration from people, their emotions, and body language, the unheard and unseen parts of the psyche.” Find Anthea on Instagram: @antheaczech.

Debbie Field trained at Wits University, Gauteng. After graduation, she moved to Cape Town and has since then been working with ceramics, encaustics and primarily in oil painting. While pursuing her own artistic career, she has been teaching painting and ceramics in her home studio since 1987, as well as running workshops country wide, teaching Summer School for the UCT programme, and more recently offering online painting workshops. Over the years she has participated in many group exhibitions in SA. Her work can be found in many homes, here and abroad. With the forced isolation of Covid, the home (our nest) has come forward in this exhibition of Inside and Out.” Find Heidi on Instagram @bennheidi1.

Larissa Matthews has followed her passion for sculpting since 2015 when she started experimenting in outdoor concrete sculptures.
